I think it’s safe to say that we can look back at old pictures and say, “What the f**k was I thinking?!” I have for sure had those moments and sometimes they aren’t even from that long ago. But looking back at outfits that I once thought were amazing and now makes me cringe made me realize that I have learned something since then. My style has evolved.
We all know that trends come and go, but real style lasts the hands of time. There are some outfits that we look back on and think I could still rock that today. Then there are others that we look back on and think how awful! But it’s all about growing and learning and really defining your style as time goes on.
For example, I used to be obsessed with having a signature style. I wanted to dress very feminine and girly, kind of preppy, always in a ton of color and accessories to match. I would absolutely avoid black like the plague because it didn’t fit into style I was trying to own. Now, I laugh at when people ask me how I would describe my style. That question is just too hard because I like too many things! Sometimes I want to be edgy, other days I want to be feminine and wear head to toe pink. So much of my own personal style has to do with where I’m going and how I’m feeling that day. But ask me that question 10 years ago and I would have told you my personal style to a tee.
Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great when people have signature styles. But as I’ve grown up and tried new things or dressed out of my comfort zone, I found that fashion is too much fun to limit yourself to one certain style. My 17 year old self would have died laughing at this outfit I have on. BLACK! TURTLE NECK! STARS! I would make fun of absolutely anyone who even thought of wearing any type of star design. But one day, I found a cute black star dress and decided to try it on. Turns out, I liked how it looked. But if I had never went shopping with an open mind and tried the dress on, I would’ve been missing out on this adorable outfit!
All of this is to say that your style is going to evolve over time…or at least it should! I remember watching What Not to Wear growing up and seeing these women rocking (or trying to!) styles for over 30 years. It was time to get with the times! And Stacy London (such a fierce queen!!!) helped these ladies step outside of their comfort zone and try something new. And wouldn’t you know it, these women were so much more confident after doing so!
So the next time you go shopping, try on something you wouldn’t normally pick up. Or next time you are going out, try putting together an outfit with items you wouldn’t normally pair together. Part of the reason fashion is so fun is because it is ever changing, ever evolving. I think we should do the same!
